28. an untitled
nightmarish 1920 Max Ernst collage which seems to
ridicule the senseless waste of human potential that was
the First World War: a flying object appears confused as
to whether it is meant to be a biplane with gracefully
fingered arms as wings, or a person with a machine stuffed
over its head and a rag or newspaper stuffed down its
mouth; while on the ground a man in a business suit and a
man in uniform help lift a wounded soldier from the
abandoned field of battle; while above and below all this
are the words: ‘to get to where he could make sense of
himself and Mortimer Jack’
29. two manila envelopes
bearing Canadian stamps: one shows Jack Lorenzo’s
address to be Inuvik, the other, Ft. Good Hope; both are
addressed to ‘Rev + Mrs John Medici Lorenzo, Emmanuel
Methodist Church, Florence, New Jersey, USA’; in among
which are written the words: ‘these piles of letters and
other scratchings sent home in bursting manila envelopes,
these then became ‘The
Remaking’ – the ‘Medici’ as Rev’s middle name
appears facetious at first, but is consistent with mj’s
decades-long ‘psychic conviction’ that the Lorenzos were
descended from Lorenzo de Medici, a conviction which
helped him understand, as well, why they presently lived
on one of their country’s principal rivers in a town named
‘Florence’, just as Lorenzo de Medici had done (on Italy’s
Arno, in Florence); and why, also, just like Lorenzo de
Medici, whose role had been to lead the Renaissance
revolution of values, and correct the sick imbalance of
the Middle Ages which had leaned so heavily toward
super-brain-spun, hyper-theological, unquestioning
Christian religiosity, and to bend mankind toward a more
humane balancing and rounding out of the human
personality, shifting some focus from the Divine to the
human: mj’s assignment was to do something similar in the
20th century USA
30. not technically part of The Remaking,
but seen rather on the home page of this website:
shows a picture from each one of mj lorenzo’s best and
best-known ‘Mexican picture stories’: (1) a 2006
descendant of native Mesoamericans, living in Angahuan, in
the state of Michoacán, Mexico; preparing
mid-morning snacks for tourists to the adjacent volcano
named Paricutín, which erupted and began to bury
St. John of the Bedspreads on the day mj lorenzo was born
in 1943; and snacks for earnest Catholic pilgrims to the
shrine of ‘Our Lord of the Miracles’ in the burnt out
skeleton of that same destroyed town’s big stone church,
which still sits, decades later, engulfed in hardened
lava; (2) a picture from ‘Peau Light Lee’, the story of a
2007 trip around central Mexico with The Tin Can and Peau
as ‘Jack-type’ friends-and-helpers; and (3) two members of
a clown troupe (during Sahuayo, Michoacán’s saint’s
day procession of tlahualiles),
one with a serpentine relief carving cut into his haircut
in the same way serpentine relief carvings were cut into
the sides of ancient Mesoamerican pyramids (also shown in
the picture for comparison)
31. mj at 18 months in
the dunes off 29th St. beach,
32. collage of: a
buttonized rectangle split in half between two
shades of blue; the Taoist symbol for Yin-and-Yang (in the
center); star and moon above; a blue Buick hurtling upside
down through space; and the words: ‘mj CRACKED UP at the
dividing of SPACE – waters east-west – and TIME – days of
the year lightening-darkening
33. digitally altered photo
of a 1960 blue Buick Electra, Rev’s or one just like
it, with a low-in-the-sky late-evening midsummer sun and
these words: ‘mj had to draw on the Electra’s fabulous
horsepower so he wouldn’t be late for his appointment with
enlightenment – he didn’t even stop to eat a hamburger,
not even a hamburger, not even a hamburger’
34. mj atop
35. mj in his Wrigley
College U.S. Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training
Corps) marching band uniform, 1960-61, age 17 or 18
(played French horn), standing at the entrance to his
freshman dorm
36. a maroon frame
including two underdressed youths (each sort of
‘wearing’ a sleeping bag) has been split down the middle
and widely divided by a blue frame with a map of the USA –
the words on the first frame say, ‘trudging up the
Mackenzie naked except for a sleeping bag as he’d lost his
clothes so he claimed in the crackup...’, while words on
the second say, ‘...mj’s two halves communicated no better
than the Atlantic and the Pacific as little as winter and
summer’
37. ‘mj’s handbook for
psychotics’ was the nickname the ‘early Remaking
pundits’ gave The
Remaking
38. photo of hiker with
backpack seated resting atop a very high and precarious
ledge far above a deep alpine valley with blue lake
below, while inserted standard Parks or Forest Service
signs say ‘Pass’ and ‘Continental Divide’; and above and
below the photo are the words: ‘mj suddenly wanted to
stand as he had when a child ON the Continental Divide –
ONE FOOT CONNECTED BY WATER TO THE ATLANTIC THE OTHER TO
THE PACIFIC’
39. two Norman
Rockwell paintings of Boy Scouts (from www.bsa), one
an Explorer Scout in front of a U.S. flag facing the
observer and saluting; the other a boy scout with palm
raised as if thinking or saying the Boy Scout oath, which
is also behind him on the wall: ‘ON MY HONOR I WILL DO MY
BEST TO DO MY DUTY TO GOD AND MY COUNTRY AND OBEY THE
SCOUT LAW...’ etc., etc.; above, between and below which
are the words: ‘Mrs Lorenzo showed the strain more – she
said, panting and wiping sweat from her brow with a tatted
hanky, this is the
worst day of my life! Rev said, Now Jo, we’ll just
have to pray that “Mortimer” comes back and KNOCKS SENSE
into this crazy “Jack”’
40. computer drawing of the
bright red, yellow and blue “M” volume of The
World Book encyclopedia with the words: ‘and in the
only volume of the WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA left from the
crack-up, the M volume, he was studying hard to learn how
Mackenzie the first explorer of the area survived the same
canoe trip down the river and BACK’
41. excerpt from a
Canadian Rockies parks brochure showing relative
locations (along the Banff-Jasper Highway, i.e., Route 93
from Banff to Jasper) of Peyto Glacier, Bow Pass, and
Peyto Lookout Road, and mentioning the 'Nature Trail'
which mj and Dlune planned to take as a kick off to their
grand overland backpacking expedition to Lake O’Hara,
where they were to culminate the Remaking trip, book and
year; the photo of Peyto Lake which is illustration #47
(see above and below) was taken from the 'Viewpoint of
valley north' mentioned here; which was reached via 'Peyto
Lookout Road'; and it was also at this spot that the
'Nature Trail' began
42. collage which opens
‘the Hay River telegram’, first chapter of The Remaking: on
a map of Great Slave Lake showing Hay River, Fort
Resolution and Yellowknife, are superimposed pictures of
cliffs, fishing excursion boats, bird’s nests and far
northern birds of all kinds; while digitally inserted
among them is a photo of a Canadian Pacific freight train
barreling straight toward us; and around all of this the
words: ‘on June 23 their anniversary the Lorenzos received
a telegram from Hay River on Great Slave Lake, Northwest
Territories, WAY UP IN CANADA’
43. photo of Rev’s blue Buick
rolled prettily upside down into a mountain meadow
of wildflowers, hooked up to the taut winch’s cable of a
tow truck, ready and waiting to be rolled back onto all
fours so it can be towed to a crack-up asylum for blue
Buicks
44. a nicely helpful
photographic overview of the Lake O’Hara terrain
from high up near Wiwaxy Gap, showing the green lake and
shore at bottom; the climb which both mj and later Dlune
took up to Opabin Meadow above that; then a good bit of
the rest of their hike: the meadow and plateau; and up to
the far upper left, Opabin Pass is hidden behind a
forested mountain hulking in the left foreground; and
above it all the incredible ramparts of some unnamed wall
of mountain millions of years old which has been more
recently carved sharply straight up-and-down by glacial
ice (not millions, but maybe only 10- to 50,000 years ago
during the Ice Age)
45. the outline of
chapters as mj originally conceived it all (only
slightly different from the current) on which have been
superimposed a collage of books, street drugs, invitations
to tourists to ‘explore the Arctic’, a blue Buick Electra
magazine ad, some traveling food, a human heart cut free
from a medical school anatomy class cadaver, a sleeping
bag, and photos of the Mackenzie River and Glacier Park
46. the Buddhist
mandala as in #17 only blurred, plus sympathetic
individual photos of mj and Dlune, each and separately, as
if to remind that ‘Part III’ of mj lorenzo’s Remaking
trip-and-book was supposed to make these two different
individuals somehow one unit; just as it was to make M
& J one
47. a photograph of Peyto
Lake from the ‘Peyto Lake VIEWPOINT’ mentioned in
#41, the exact same 'mesmerizing' view mj and Dlune saw
every day all day long from a fifty-foot picture window in
their motel manager’s room; this photo is used on the
present website's home page, and also as an opener to the
'Peyto Lake' chapter of The
Remaking
48. Mortimer Lorenzo’s
midwinter attempt to express his ideas regarding
‘professionalfriend – ship’ in several mathematical
formulas, the main gist being that: the less you knew
about someone from experience, the more you might imagine
either good or bad about them; and you were therefore
quite likely to ‘project’ (a psychiatric term) ideas about
your own darkest self incorrectly onto them; especially
when you were in the ‘superior’ role of ‘Mortimer’ and
were as arrogant as a tyrannical king, and were in
possession of almost all of the power in the relationship,
and thought you possessed the right to
imagine and dictate any darn thing that you wanted
regarding the friendship (as in the case of: the
superpower, USA, vis-à-vis the rest of the world) –
(the pundits were forever floored by how much and how
easily The Remaking
could help almost anyone comprehend planetary geopolitics)
49. the first
illustration in The Remaking, the 'first frontispiece’,
shows the blue Buick hurtling through dark thunderstorm-y
nighttime space, about to land upside down in an alpine
meadow of ‘bear grass’ wildflowers; while sun, moon, stars
and aurora borealis all at once shed light on the scene
50. here we can see the
rest of the Opabin landscape that was obscured in
#44 by ‘a mountain hulking in the foreground’; that
mountain is out of view now (to the left) and Opabin Pass
is visible at the head of the meadow and plateau: but to
reach that pass mj, and later Dlune, would have to
traverse the glacier seen here at the head of the valley;
it was full of dark blue crevasses but well marked with
boot tracks of previous hikers, since it had not snowed
recently; beyond Opabin Pass they would have to descend
into a second valley and then climb up the famous endless
field of scree to Wenkchemna Pass to cross the Divide into
the Valley of the Ten Peaks and descend to Moraine Lake
and civilization again; in this photo mj is resting in the
heart of the meadow, in the spot he described in his 1961
Wrigley creative writing class poem (see: the 'brief
chronology', 'spring
1961 - a Wrigley Creative Writing'); and the
inscription at the bottom says: ‘A mandala is an antidote
to a chaotic state of mind’
51. Rev and Jo in
Washington, D.C., with the U.S. capitol behind; on
their way to show off their wonderful newly married selves
to Rev’s vast extended Lorenzo family in and around
Winchester, Virginia (a family descended from a French
Protestant ‘Lorenzo’ whose family had been persecuted in
Catholic France and who settled in the newly founded
English colony of Maryland in 1650, therefore, and began
plantation-farming tobacco around 1660 with the help of
slaves imported from Africa)
52. Rev & Jo in
front of her parents’ summer house in
53. ‘Rev’s sexy big blue
steely-winged dreamboat of a car’, as the
inscription says, photo taken (approaching sunset) in
August, 1964, of Rev’s first 1960 blue Buick Electra near the spot
where the Canadian Pacific Railway achieved the modern
engineering marvel of switchbacking, looping and tunneling
their trains through the Continental Divide between the
adjacent Rocky Mountain provinces of Alberta and British
Columbia (Kicking Horse Pass, between the town of Lake
Louise, in the province of Alberta, and the town of Field,
in the province of British Columbia)
54. as Jack approached
Fort Smith from the north he began ‘reading his future
in maps’ and saw that Fort Smith and Alberta were
where most of mj lorenzo’s critical healing would take
place; and so he began to liken his curative Canadian trip
to a healing mandalic rose window (as in circular French
cathedral stain-glass windows); for Jung had said that ‘a
square approaching a circle’ was ‘the universal symbol of
transformation’ and that meant that the very center of
that squared circle (the map), dingy, grey, empty wintery
Fort Smith, would be his healing spa: here we see a
(stained-glass) 'rose window' from Chartres Cathedral
(France) centered on a map of Canada centered on Fort
Smith
